Who invented the sponge?
A scientist named Otto Bayer, accidentally invented polyurethane foam in 1937 which is the material sponges are made from. German scientists persisted in creating uses for the foam, and made a defective batch that had many air bubbles, which in result resembled sea sponges which had been used since the middle ages to help with bodily hygiene.
The first sponges created were easily broken apart during dish washing uses because of how fragile they were, however as sponges improved overtime they were made to be more and more durable.
